One of the things I’m really enjoying about studying Dr. Weil’s book is the optimistic attitude he encourages. Hope is one of the most amazing things about being human. Even in the most difficult times, the ability to have hope can help pull us through. When health is a chronic issue, maintaining a hopeful and optimistic attitude is so important (and very difficult!) I like focusing on our ability to heal. Since the cold and flu season is upon us, the girls have come home with their runny noses and such. I know that the possibility of a recurrence of MRSA infection is always there. Helping my kids to stay as healthy as possible and keeping a positive attitude seems to be the best thing I can do for them. Filed under: 8 Weeks To Optimum Health and Week 2 Comments: None |

Just to let you know, I submitted our names and email addresses to Dr. Weil, as they offered us a trial membership to their Optimum Health group. I submitted them last week, and am in hopes they will get to us this week, now that the holiday is over! Filed under: 8 Weeks To Optimum Health and Beyond Books Comments: None |

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! Our server is acting a little hairy today, so I am going to get this post up as fast as I can in between it going down. Please post yourself and let’s talk about what you find important and significant to you about Week Two. This week, Dr. Weil is very concerned about our drinking water. He would like for us to get it tested and make absolutely sure there is no chlorine in it, as well as some other terrible things. Diet: Keep eating fish and broccoli this week. Choose whole grain foods. Also, look at the soy products in the store (refrigerated section) and choose one to try this week. Substitute some green tea this week for some of your regular servings of coffee or cola. Supplements: Add 25,000IU of mixed carotenes at breakfast. Make sure that it contains lycopene. Exercise: Increase daily walk to 15 minutes. Mental/Spiritual: Go to a park or special place in nature. Reflect and enjoy the energy there. Practice breathing exercises, and try a one day news fast by avoiding all newspapers, online news and news on television. Optional: Pay attention to the images in your mind this week, and try to examine how they affect you, both positively and negatively, and how imagery might could be used in healing. It has been very busy around here for the last few days, as I am sure it has been with you all as well. I just wanted to say a quick Happy Thanksgiving to you all, and was wondering also if anything about your traditional Thanksgiving meal has been affected by your studies this week. It is a week of butter and sugar and all of those unhealthy things! Ha! As for me, I just at a little breakfast and took my morning supplements and had a big old glass of water. But, I fear, this will be about the only healthy part of the day, although I am never very hungry by the time dinner rolls around after all of the cooking. Anyway, healthy or not, I hope you have a great day, and are as thankful for your blessings as we are for ours!

You know, I hate the word supplements, but I guess that is just what they are.
I went to the drugstore yesterday, actually on a search for probiotics which came up pretty fruitless, but did go ahead and get a couple of things. Naturally, my main intention was to get Vitamin C, and that is the one thing I walked out of the store without. I got a big bottle of Vitamin E instead–I think I was overwhelmed and got confused. Oh bother. Anyway, back to the task at hand. There are so many brands of vitamins, I wish there was a good trusty reference as to which are actually useful, but I guess time will tell. I would be thrilled to hear from any of you who know a lot more about these things than I do. What I don’t want is to be told that I have to spend a fortune to get a decent vitamin! I chose the mid-range brand, as I usually do in situations like this.
I also did the no no and chose flax oil in a capsule form rather than in the seed form. I thought that I would be much more likely to actually use it that way, I hope I will still reap the benefits. As I get more in tune with all of this, I will change to the seeds and grinding them myself, I imagine that they would be tasty in yogurt, and I know the fiber will be very beneficial.
Anybody else adding supplements to their diet this week?

This is my favorite way to make salmon. I got the recipe from one of my sisters, but I’m not sure if she made it up or got it from someone else. Preheat oven to 350. Put salmon in a baking pan. Salt & pepper to taste. Squeeze the juice of one fresh lemon and one fresh orange onto the fish. Mix together honey & mustard and baste salmon with it. Bake until salmon is beginning to flake. At the end, turn the oven to broil for a few minutes. And that’s it! I hope you enjoy this simple recipe! Does anyone else have a recipe they’d like to share? I have a question, and wonder if anyone knows the answer. I know the downside of all of the artificial sweetners like NutriSweet and SweetnLow (besides the fact that they taste disgusting), but does anyone know any bad things about Splenda? I haven’t heard anything mainstream against it, but I am sure that there is. Dr. Weil answered a question about Splenda back in 2002, but I haven’t found any more current info from him on the topic. If anyone knows any, I would sure appreciate the information!

In Dr. Andrew Weil’s “Eight Weeks to Optimum Health”, Week One outlines some concrete suggestions on things we can do to help our bodies get healthier. His first suggestion is to begin to pay attention to the ingredients used in the foods we eat. He recommends using olive oil and avoiding any products with partially hydrogenated oils in their ingredients. He also suggests not using artificial sweeteners or products with artificial food coloring in them. The first project he encourages us to do is to go through our food pantries to discard any oils that may be rancid and to plan to replace the contents of our pantries with the healthiest items available. This is a basic summary of the actions encouraged for the first week. I find the positive outlook that Dr. Weil brings to the idea of health and well-being to be like a breath of fresh air! I am looking forward to making these changes in my home (especially bringing home fresh flowers!) The only thing I find difficult is the suggestion about Vitamin C. I get heartburn from taking a lot of vitamins. Does anyone have any suggestions for me about this? If you have had this problem too and have found a solution, I would really appreciate hearing about it. Thanks! And good luck to everyone who is starting along with us today! I am Maureen I joined the group through my work with the Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths (RID). I was drawn to RID by the death of my mother from hospital infections including MRSA. She entered a major NYC hospital with a fractured shoulder and died from the infections she contracted there. I am very interested in this “Wellness” topic. I have lived the last 17 years as a “disabled” person due to health issues and challanges. I have read Dr. Weil’s “8 Weeks To Optimum Health in the Past.” I am looking forward to rereading it with my online friends and learning with all of you. I find that it is so easy to get caught up in the busyness of life and forget the simple Maureen Filed under: Introduce Yourself Comments: 1 Comment |
