Homeostasis is a state of equilibrium that is the aim for all living things. When a living thing is sick, the healing part of it bursts in to action, in an attempt to return things to normal. We have created drugs to help us achieve this quickly, but at what price? With almost every drug that helps you, it has a side effect that is harmful, even if we don’t recognize this effect immediately. Take the problem of antibiotic resistance for one thing. Even if there were no other harmful side effects of antibiotics, we have disrupted the genetics of bacteria, making them stronger and more difficult for our bodies to handle themselves. We did not see this effect when we were taking the antibiotics, but boy do we see it now. The natural approach to healing takes longer to see results, because it is done using our body and its natural desire to achieve homeostasis, rather than introducing a foreign chemical. Dr. Weil believes that it takes a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks to see the effects of a program like this. There are several stories of people who have been healed naturally in the introduction of 8 Weeks, and all of them reported not much in the way of results in the first month, but dramatic results in the months following. I also appreciate Dr. Weil taking things slow, and making gradual changes that are easier and less disruptive to our lives. I personally firmly believe in taking “baby steps” towards changing bad habits and introducing new and better habits. I know I am not the kind of person that can take dramatic changes and keep them in place for long without reverting back to my old, comfortable ways before I know it. I do want to share a couple of Dr. Weil’s successes from the end of the introduction. The first person says, “My immune system seems to be stronger. I have learned to breathe differently and have an increased awareness of the way my body responds to different situations. I have been inspired to take a look at the way I was living.” The second person reports: “I feel healthier physically, mentally, spiritually. I have more energy, I sleep better and fewer hours. I feel happier, calmer, less anxious. My immune system has become stronger. I don’t catch colds. I don’t get tired after an active day. My blood tests have improved. And I function better overall during the day.” I think these are changes that most of us could really benefit from. Tomorrow afternoon I will be sending our email addresses to Dr. Weil for his trial program, so if you would like to join us, please go ahead and register! Tommorow we begin Week 1–Are you ready?
