Dangers of radiation

As I think about the things I have read along the way in this book, so much of it I dismissed in my younger years as being a bunch of “liberal hooey”–a bunch of stuff dreamed up by the hippies in their quest for “oneness with the earth,” or whatever. LOL

I am amazed at the difference in how I think about them now, and am especially reminded of this while reading about all of the dangerous sources of radiation in our lives. Dr. Weil talks about electric clock radios (keep them a foot from your head at night), heating pads and electric blankets (don’t use them), microwave ovens (don’t stand next to them, and don’t cook things in them for very long) and the sun (wear sunscreen, and don’t ever use a tanning bed). I wrote an article not long ago at eBeautyDaily about Dr. Weil’s views on the healthy side of sunshine, that is a bit of a contrast to what is in this book. You might find it interesting. I think his views on this subject have changed just a bit since the publishing of this book.

This is the website for the group mentioned in Week Three, Environmental Working Group, that covers information about pesticides in fruits and vegetables. This is a really nice website, and it is full of interesting information–especially if this is as new to any of you as it is to me. Here is the list of the 12 fruits/veggies that are most contaminated, followed by a list of the 12 least contaminated:

Soy products

Ok, believe it or not (I can’t hardly believe it), the Gardenburgers were a hit over here! My daughter thought they were really good, not quite as good as my big thick juicy hamburgers, but very good nonetheless. Now, if I can figure out what to do with them when we get rid of the processed buns sandwiching it! Zoe (my daughter) also wants to try tofu. I looked and looked at it in the store last week, but I am just not sure what to do with it. Any ideas, anyone?

On somewhat of a related note, my friend Rhys is blogging over at b5media (where I do my beauty blog now, eBeauty Daily), and has started a really interesting blog called VeggieChic, which will chronicle her adventures into trying to become a vegetarian. It is a brand new blog, but she has already been taste testing soy products, so she might just have some good stuff coming out over there for us.

And then even a less related note, I have an interview up today on b5media. It focuses on beauty, but if you are interested you can find it here: Christina Jones b5 media interview. You will have to scroll down the page a little bit, to find it, but the picture is humongous. You can’t hardly miss me. LOL Don’t laugh at me too much! :)

Week Three Overview

This is going by so fast, I guess ’tis the season, though. I hope you are having a good relaxed season so far, and that it stays that way for the next few weeks too!

On to Week Three!

The projects for this week are to shop around for organic produce–Dr. Weil provides us with a list of those vegetables that are particularly susceptable to agrichemicals on p. 84 (some of these include strawberries, peppers, green beans, apples and celery). This is good information to know!

We are also to remove all electrical sources from the immediate vicinity of where we sleep, as radiation is a concern. Also, buy UV protective sunglasses if you do not have any.

Dietary changes in Week Three are add an extra serving of veggies to one meal this week, eat fish twice, and replace one serving of meat with a soy product.

Add 400-800 mg of Vitamin E and 200-300 mg of Selenium. (This will be nice and easy, as I bought that big bottle of Vitamin E instead of C at the drugstore during the first week!)

Increase daily walk to 20 minutes, and cut back on other aerobic exercise if you do it daily. Replace it every other day with a walk. Do stretching every day to improve flexibility-he gives examples in this chapter as well.

For the mind and spirit, we are to expand our breathing exercises and add “Let Yourself Be Breathed,” which you can find in this chapter as well, here is some more information online about Dr. Weil’s breathing exercises. This one is described at the bottom of the page.

Make a list of some inspirational books you would be interested in reading. Ask around for recommendations from other people. Also, make a list of your acquaintances who make you feel alive, happy and positive. Vow to spend some more time with them this week. Continue a one day fast from all news this week as well.

Optional activities are to buy more flowers for your home and to learn about how to grow some of your own food, even if you have no more room than a container.

Dr. Weil’s Optimum Health Plan

Healthy Water

Have you had your water tested before? We have well water, and between the fact that it tastes disgusting and any appliance that we have that uses water only lasts a few years and is totally corroded with minerals, we don’t drink it. My thought is that it is probably good for us, because it is so full of minerals, and certainly there is no chlorine in it but eww! My brother in law has been telling me and showing me on the well pump where he says I should add chlorine to it, but I really have hesitated to do that. But, maybe since we don’t drink it, it would be ok. Hmm.

I have noticed that all of the water in our area (East/Central Texas) tastes very salty and mineral-y, and really dont like any of it. I come from Tennessee, which has the best tasting drinking water in the world, I think, so am very spoiled. LOL

Anyway, we purchase our drinking water, and have for a long time. I went to the place we purchase it from here in Bryan/College Station, and unfortunately they dont have any water testing results that the kid in the store could find. It tastes good, but I guess that doesn’t really matter! I think I will call today and see if I can find someone in charge that might be able to email me the results before I go turn in a water sample to the county extention people.

Soy Foods

Well, I went to the grocery store yesterday, and was boggled by looking at the soy products. I chose the Gardenburgers, but there they sit in my freezer, and I was not tantalized by the thought of cooking them for dinner last night. I need to get over the hump! I would love some thoughts by some of you on how to do that, or at least someone to tell me how delightful they are, and to try them! LOL

On the encouraging side of things, my daughter asked if we could have them for dinner tonight, so maybe I will give them a whirl. I feel like I need backup dinner though. Ugh. Suggestions?

An attitude of gratitude

One of the things I’m really enjoying about studying Dr. Weil’s book is the optimistic attitude he encourages. Hope is one of the most amazing things about being human. Even in the most difficult times, the ability to have hope can help pull us through. When health is a chronic issue, maintaining a hopeful and optimistic attitude is so important (and very difficult!) I like focusing on our ability to heal. Since the cold and flu season is upon us, the girls have come home with their runny noses and such. I know that the possibility of a recurrence of MRSA infection is always there. Helping my kids to stay as healthy as possible and keeping a positive attitude seems to be the best thing I can do for them.

Optimum Health Trial

Week Two Overview

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! Our server is acting a little hairy today, so I am going to get this post up as fast as I can in between it going down. Please post yourself and let’s talk about what you find important and significant to you about Week Two.

This week, Dr. Weil is very concerned about our drinking water. He would like for us to get it tested and make absolutely sure there is no chlorine in it, as well as some other terrible things.

Diet: Keep eating fish and broccoli this week. Choose whole grain foods. Also, look at the soy products in the store (refrigerated section) and choose one to try this week. Substitute some green tea this week for some of your regular servings of coffee or cola.

Supplements: Add 25,000IU of mixed carotenes at breakfast. Make sure that it contains lycopene.

Exercise: Increase daily walk to 15 minutes.

Mental/Spiritual: Go to a park or special place in nature. Reflect and enjoy the energy there. Practice breathing exercises, and try a one day news fast by avoiding all newspapers, online news and news on television.

Optional: Pay attention to the images in your mind this week, and try to examine how they affect you, both positively and negatively, and how imagery might could be used in healing.
