Saying Grace
Posted on 12.16.05 by Christina Jones @ 8:55 am

Dr. Weil says (on p. 109):

The point of bringing a spiritual perspective into your life is to remind yourself that you are more than just your physical body, that there is more to life than the material universe.

He thinks that a good time to remind ourselves of this is when we sit down to eat, keeping in mind that whether you are a strict vegetarian or an omnivore, that you are taking life each time you eat, to sustain your life. He says “Life lives at the expense of other life,” which is something I had never given much thought to before. I mean, I think about it, being a huge meat lover myself, but never think about it in terms of eating my veggies, but it is true. So take a moment before you eat, and say a prayer if you are a religous person, or at the very least, reflect on being thankful that you have food to eat, or just close your eyes for a moment and concentrate on your breathing.

Garlic Redux
Posted on 12.15.05 by Christina Jones @ 10:12 pm

Oh, I thought I liked garlic. Ha! Had you asked me before tonight, I would have sworn that I had eaten raw garlic before, but now I know that I haven’t. I made spaghetti for dinner, and put tons of fresh garlic in it (towards the very end, so it wouldn’t cook too much), but I ate a thin sliver of it. OMG. Obviously, I have never done that before, and nor will I do it again very soon. LOL

The first impression was intense burn, and then nausea, and then I was fine, but with a mighty ill taste in my mouth. Yucko. How something can taste so good cooked, and so foul raw, I do not know.

I finally found a multi-carotene supplement today, so will add that to the routine tomorrow. I have also cut my coffee intake down from close to 2 pots a day to about 1/2 a pot. I always drank green tea in the evening, so that wasn’t anything new to add. We are eating salads at night, and broccoli twice a week too. I feel healthy, but hope that all this health food will start slimming me down some day soon! I would love some benefit in that department too, although I am totally thrilled that my skin is doing so much better!

Oh yeah, one more thing…I found wild salmon at Walmart, frozen, for $3.99 a pound. Half the price of anywhere else I have seen it. Anyone else know of anything better?

Improvements to report
Posted on 12.14.05 by Christina Jones @ 8:10 am

Just a quick thing I have noticed…my skin is doing WAY better than it has been. I am also using Dr. Weil’s Plantidote, but not as regularly as I would like. I really think the supplements are helping a lot (and probably helping a lot more than just my skin!).

I finally tried some Wild Alaskan Salmon last night, and it was SO yummy! This is how I prepared it:

Mixed about a teaspoon each of melted butter, honey and dijon mustard–spread it on top of the salmon.

On top of that, I sprinkled about an even mixture of ground pecans and breadcrumbs, with some parsley mixed in.

Bake at 400 degrees for about 20 minutes. Served it with a big leafy salad and some whole grain bread. Yum! And the kids loved it too. Hallelujah!

Then we went to our Boy Scout pack meeting, where they had all sorts of Christmassy junk food. Oh well. At least we got the good nutrients out of the dinner we ate. LOL

Garlic
Posted on 12.13.05 by Christina Jones @ 7:34 am

Mmm I love garlic! I have to say, I never eat it fresh though, which according to Dr. Weil, is the best way to reap its benefits. I imagine that fresh garlic, chopped and added to a fresh salad dressing would be the easiest way to get it into your body fresh.

Garlic, as well as being very tasty, is very beneficial to your heart, and is a strong antiseptic and helps to deactivate some of the carcinogens that we take in to our bodies.

I have about 40 garlic plants in my teensy little garden, that I messed up by trying to harvest at the wrong time. Garlic can be finicky, but in general it grows very nicely. I just have to do better in the harvesting department next year!

Week Four Overview
Posted on 12.12.05 by Christina Jones @ 7:46 am

Almost halfway through already! You may have noticed Denise’s absence during the last week or so–she has been having major computer issues, I am sure she will have them taken care of soon and will be back. Personally, I am not sure what I would do with myself without my computer for a week. Yikes!

Also, please keep Peg on your prayer lists, she is going into the hospital today or tomorrow for some serious work on her leg, and the MRSA that continues to invade it. This will apparently be a much more aggressive attempt at treatment –Peg, we wish you the best, and Dale, keep your chin up, you are a fabulous caregiver! I hope everyone is lucky enough to have a great man like Dale standing by their side!

Ok, on to Week Four:

Projects: Find solutions to problems in your bedroom that are causing you to miss out on quality sleep. Consider sounds and smells and consider getting an air filter if you have sensitivities to irritants.

Diet: Eat more garlic this week and replace 2 meals with soy protein.

Exercise: Step up to a 25 minute walk daily (5 days a week).

Mental/Spiritual: Do a 2 day news fast this week. Continue doing the breathing exercises, and learn the Relaxing Breath. Talk to someone who has recovered from illness or injury about their experience.

Also, try to give thanks before each meal this week, in whatever way you are comfortable.
