Welcome to Week Six. The up side is that our study is going to last a couple of weeks longer than it normally would have! I hope you all had a great holiday and were able to keep up your supplements and even slip in some salmon and broccoli to your Christmas meal (yeah, right!). So here we go: Projects: Learn about tonics and decide on one that is right for you. Take a steam bath twice this week. Diet: Eat fish, soy foods, and broccoli twice this week (yes, each!). Add some cooked greens to your diet this week. Mental/Spiritual: Extend news fast to FOUR days. Visit an inspiring art museum. Practice breathing exercises every day. Optional: Try a one day juice fast: any amount of fruit/vegetable juice plus water and herbal tea. Take one Vitamin C, but skip the other supplements on this day. Ok, I really wanted to get back yesterday (well really, REALLY wanted to get back last Monday), but our family has been plagued with the stomach flu and unfortunately, I could not do everything and it was this group that took the brunt of the disappearance. I thought we were all done with it last Friday, but then I woke up yesterday with a violent stomach ache, and it was all I could do to get the things I absolutely had to do done. So rather than wait until next Monday, we are going to lose a day in our study this week and go on from here! So in the interest of not combining my whining with Dr. Weils great nutrition and wellness help, I am going to end this now, and will start on the Week 6 overview in the next post. I missed this group, and am glad to be back! Filed under: Beyond Books Comments: None |

This is an older article about an interview with Dr. Weil at his Arizona ranch, I thought you might find it interesting… I hope you all are having a Happy New Year, we will get back to work on 8 Weeks next Monday, once all the hoopla has died down around here, the kids are back in school and the leftovers are all gone!! ![]() I just wanted to let you all know that we are going to take a hiatus for the next week and a half or so, due to the holidays. My family is coming tomorrow from Tennessee, and by the time they leave, it will be next Thursday, so I figured we might as well wait until after the new year to start on Week Six. I hope you have the very Merriest Christmas, a very Happy New Year, and I hope to see you back on January 2nd! Love, Filed under: Beyond Books Comments: 1 Comment |

Ginger has good effects on your digestive system, neutralizing components of other foods that might normally cause you indigestion. This is a good reference page about the history and benefits of using ginger, from Swedish.com. Be aware, like garlic (LOL), raw ginger has a bite!

I just read an article this morning and posted it on eBeautyDaily about the influence of the movie, Memoirs of a Geisha, on beauty and fashion this upcoming year. There was an interesting blurb in it from one of the stars of the movie, that you might be interested in:
I would like to take one too! Ugh! Filed under: 8 Weeks To Optimum Health and Week 5 Comments: None |

I really have no idea where to find a sauna here, without joining a health club (which is not going to happen). Most of the year, here in Texas, it is a sauna everywhere you go, I certainly get plenty of sweating in! I wish I was one of those women who did not sweat, but unfortunately (but maybe better for my health, according to Dr. Weil) I am not. I sweat like a pig. I wonder how a hot tub figures in to this? I can’t think of a better reason to suggest that to my husband then for our good health and wellbeing! Thank goodness we are off the garlic this week. I don’t want to try anymore raw garlic for awhile! Ha ha! This weeks: Projects: Find a steam bath or sauna and spend up to 20 minutes per day in it (making sure to replenish lost water!) Diet: Try some crystallized ginger. Buy some fresh ginger and make some ginger tea (1/2 t. grated fresh gingerroot, 1/2 teaspoon honey - Put the ginger into a cup of boiling water, let steep for 10-15 minutes, then strain and add honey). Exercise: Increase daily walk to 30 minutes. Mental/Spiritual: Extend news fast to 3 days. Keep doing your breathing exercises and add the Stimulating Breath. Listen to music that is uplifting to you, and bring more fresh flowers into your home. Optional: Do a one day fruit fast - eat nothing for one day except fresh fruit, water and herbal tea. Take vitamin C but skip other supplements today. Technorati Tags: garlic, ginger, Exercise, fruitFiled under: 8 Weeks To Optimum Health and Week 5 Comments: None |

Dr. Weil says (on p. 109):
He thinks that a good time to remind ourselves of this is when we sit down to eat, keeping in mind that whether you are a strict vegetarian or an omnivore, that you are taking life each time you eat, to sustain your life. He says “Life lives at the expense of other life,” which is something I had never given much thought to before. I mean, I think about it, being a huge meat lover myself, but never think about it in terms of eating my veggies, but it is true. So take a moment before you eat, and say a prayer if you are a religous person, or at the very least, reflect on being thankful that you have food to eat, or just close your eyes for a moment and concentrate on your breathing.
